Cape Town named world’s best city of festivals and events

South Africa’s most beautiful gem, Cape Town, has been crowned the world’s best festival and event destination, which has been confirmed by none other than the 2021 World Travel Awards.

Other beautiful cities around the world may have suffered less from the COVID-19 pandemic by hosting famous events over the past two years compared to Cape Town, but the mother city has once again become a world champion.

We all know the international events Cape Town is famous for, but let us down anyway: Cape Town Jazz Festival, Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts, Rocking the Daisies, Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and SA Cheese Festival.

Reacting to the announcement of becoming the best festival and event destination in 2021, City Councilor James Vos, member of the Cape Town Economic Growth Committee, said;

“It’s a real feather in the cap of the Cape that we are always recognized for the stellar events that we are synonymous with.”

“This award is a celebration of our city on the world stage. It’s proof that people around the world have a special place in their hearts for our festivals and our annual events calendar.

So what makes the city special besides its natural beauty? Vos said the city’s diverse cultures should not be underestimated.

“The joy of Cape Town is its diversity. Our wealth of experiences reflects our rich melting pot of heritages and cultures.

One of the main organizers of the event said winning the award in the current COVID-19 coronavirus climate is extraordinary for any city.

“Earning tourism’s top honor this year is more important and more valuable than ever. With the expected return of global tourism, the dominant trend among travelers is for extra indulgence and a determination to book with the best, ”said Graham Cooke, founder of the World travel price.

“My sincere congratulations once again to you and the entire team behind this incredible and well-deserved achievement.”

Meanwhile, winning the world’s best festival and event destination also means more immediate responsibility on the serious business of the day.

Capetonians and citizens of Mzansi have been reminded to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as the fight continues.

“South Africa’s already struggling tourism and hospitality sectors are in urgent need of support through domestic travel,” said Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy.

“Find your freedom by getting vaccinated, then exploring Cape Town – the best Travel & Leisure city to visit in Africa and the Middle East, and now the leading city for festivals and events.”
