The internet has been in turmoil since Monday night after a viral video at the Venice International Film Festival convinced many that Harry Styles spat on his co-star Chris Pine. It all started at don’t worry darling premiere, which proved to be one of Hollywood’s most dramatic outings.
There were people on both sides of the theory arguing for hours with internet sleuths finding different angles and slowing down the footage. Well, everyone can rest easy because Pine’s rep has cleared the air.
His rep told People it was a “ridiculous story” and a “complete fabrication” that resulted in “a bizarre online illusion that is clearly misleading and allows for foolish speculation.” “Just to be clear, Harry Styles didn’t spit on Chris Pine,” he told the outlet.
Although there have been reported (and somewhat obvious) tensions between the film’s director Olivia Wilde and directing Florence Hugh, Pine’s representative assured that this was not the case with the men. “There is nothing but respect between these two men, and any suggestion to the contrary is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply doesn’t exist,” he said.
It’s not the only time during the festival that they’ve caught the eye. People shared videos of their joint talks. “You know Chris Pine is a good actor because he knows how he kept a straight face throughout this monologue,” one person wrote on Twitter.
don’t worry darling won’t hit theaters in the US until September 23, but audiences have had a front row seat to the drama surrounding the film. From Wilde’s claims that she fired Shia LaBeouf (which the actor later denied) to rumors of a pay gap between Pugh and Styles, it’s been messy. We’ll have to wait and see what other dramas come out of the movie in the weeks to come.
But don’t be surprised if you don’t see Pugh at any other premieres anymore — as BuzzFeed noted, the Venice Film Festival was his only press engagement.
