Crunchyroll Expo announces the new Crunchy City Music Fest and its first headliner, ATARASHII GAKKO!

Crunchyroll Expo has announced the New Crunchy City Music Fest, a three-day music festival featuring domestic and international artists, which will run concurrently with the anime convention. The New Crunchy City Music Fest also announced its first headliner, 88rising’s ATARASHII GAKKO!.

Select artists from the New Crunchy City Music Fest will be available for streaming and digital rebroadcast until August 9, 2022. Additional details on alternate views will be available soon.

ATARASHII GAKKO! are a group of four young women, wearing sailor uniforms traditionally worn by Japanese students in the 70s and 80s, who have created their own unique brand of music and choreography. Their combination of Japanese butoh dancing, headbanging and street dancing with J-Pop, Showa-era kayokyoku, punk and rap music has created a unique genre only for ATARASHII GAKKO!.

Crunchyroll describes ATARASHII GAKKO! as:

“The extravagant quartet – made up of kawaii but fierce mizyuwildcard Suzukigracious Kanon and awesome rin – break down genre walls to create music that blends elements of pop, jazz, hip-hop, rock and more, delivered with punk energy and featuring frenetic dance moves, choreographed by all four members themselves.

In addition to the New Crunchy City Music Fest, Crunchyroll Expo features four distinct neighborhoods: Central Shopping District which features merchandise and giveaways exclusive to Crunchyroll Expo; Arts District which has nearly 150 artists; Theater District for anime premieres and screenings, and Super Arcade for games, ravings, and more unique programming.

Access to the music festival is included for free with Crunchyroll Expo tickets. From August 5-7, 2022, the anime convention will be held at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, CA.
