JSS Music Festival on June 25 and 26

Mysore/Mysore: JSS Sangeetha Sabha organizes a music festival weekend on June 25 (Saturday) and June 26 (Sunday) at the Navajyothi Auditorium of JSS Women’s College, Saraswathipuram. Three concerts will be presented by renowned artists as well as emerging musicians.

On the 25th at 6 p.m. Singer MK Sankaran Namboothiri (Kerala) will perform with Sumanth Manjunath on violin, Prof Mavaluru Srinivasan on mridanga and Prof JS Ramanujam on ghata.

The next day’s concert will begin with a violin-mandolin duet by Abhay Anil Kumar (violin) from Canada and Rakshith Prasad (mandolin) from Mysuru, accompanied by Radhesh on mridanga and S. Manjunath on ghata.

This will be followed by a classical Hindustani performance by Dr. Nagaraj Rao Havaldar, (Bengaluru), backed on vocals by Omkar Nath Havaldar. He will be accompanied by Sameer Havaldar on harmonium and Kedarnath Havaldar on tabla.

Profile of the artists

MK Sankaran Namboothiri is All India Radio’s youngest top ‘A’ singer. Recognized as a child prodigy, he started learning music at the age of ten under CS Narayanan Namboothiri. He was later trained by TV Gopalakrishnan, Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma and KV Narayanaswamy.

Pt. Dr. Nagaraj Rao Havaldar is a disciple of Madhava Gudi, himself a senior disciple of Kirana scion Bhimsen Joshi. He holds a “Sangeetha Ratna” degree in Hindustani Classical Music from the University of Karnataka, Dharwad. Gold medalist in master’s degree in history and archeology, he holds a doctorate in music from the University of Karnataka (thesis entitled “The history of classical music in Karnataka”).

Abhay Anil Kumar was introduced to Karnatak music at the age of nine under Vid. Thanadevy Mithrava of Toronto. Currently under the guidance of violin maestros Mysore Nagaraj and Mysore Dr. Manjunath, Abhay works as a software developer for a consulting firm in Toronto.

Rakshith Prasad, who holds an MS in Embedded Systems Engineering from BITS Pilani, was guided by stalwarts like Vid. AV Dattatreya, Vid. Mandolin U. Shrinivas, Vid. Sampagodu Vighnaraja; currently by Vid. Dr. Mysore Manjunath.
