At Kumail Nanjiani’s physique and its varying degrees of shredding since becoming an Eternal has been a source of new trends in recent years. So when it was announced that he would be starring in a Hulu limited series about the world of male stripping called Welcome to Chippendales, people came to the wrong conclusions about what Nanjiani’s role would be. To this year Vulture Festival in Los Angeles, show creator Robert Spiegel told Nanjiani that people “thought you were a stripper…because of your abs.” Co-executive producer Jenni Konner has confirmed that people still assume he’ll be playing one of the famous buff dancing stallions. Nanjiani actually plays Chippendales founder Steve Banerjee and he’s “so grateful” for the role.
“I keep my shirt on all the time. And they have to watch me eat cheesecake,” Nanjiani said. “It was great. More of that. I liked it.” That is, he loved it until he ate so much he had to start sleeping with a CPAP machine: “It’s a huge thing on your face. It’s a noisy machine that keeps you alive all night long.
But if Nanjiani became a stripper, hypothetically, he knows exactly what his routine would be: “I would be a baker. There are so many things you can do with chopsticks. And those donuts that are…”
Nanjiani did a long stretch and co-star Annaleigh Ashford knew exactly what he was talking about. “Lightning. Long John.
“Bear Claws if you have one really good day,” Nanjiani added. Ashford, meanwhile, knows exactly the song she’d like to strip to: “Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer sing ‘No More Tears.’
