the 75th Cannes Film Festival starts on Tuesday and this time the prestigious film festival celebrates Indian cinema. India has been chosen as the first “country of honor” of the Cinema Market, and on the opening day, an Indian delegation, led by I&B Minister Anurag Thakur, will walk the red carpet. The delegation includes AR Rahman, Pooja Hegde, Shekhar Kapur among others.
Earlier, Akshay Kumar was also due to walk the red carpet but the actor tested positive for Covid-19. He tweeted: “I was really looking forward to supporting our cinema at the India Pavilion at #Cannes2022, but unfortunately tested positive for Covid. Go put it down. Many best wishes to you and your entire team, @ianuragthakur. Really gonna miss being there.
This year, six Indian films are screened at the Cannes Film Market. These include – Rocketry – The Nambi Effect (Hindi, English, Tamil), Godavari (Marathi), Alpha Beta Gamma (Hindi), Boomba Ride (Mishing), Dhuin (Maithili) and Niraye Thathakalulla Maram (Malayalam).
Indian actor Deepika Padukone is part of the jury of the prestigious film festival. “While this looks like a personal victory, it also feels like a slightly bigger victory for the South Asian community… We can literally count on our fingers the number of times someone from India has served on the jury or had the opportunity to represent the country on a platform like this,” Deepika told PTI.
