Lumad Basakanon tribe wins gold in international festival in South Korea

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Bringing the colors and spirit of the Sinulog Festival to the world.

This is what Tribu Lumad Basakanon of Cebu presented at the recently concluded mighty Daegu Festival in South Korea that finally made them champions of the competition.

The contingent beat other groups from different parts of the world who participated in the international category of the festival.

“Congratulations to Lumad Basakanon for winning the Gold Medal in the International Category of the Mighty Daegu Festival in Daegu, South Korea,” said Ricky Ballesteros, Co-Chairman of the Korean-Philippine Festival Cultural Exchange Association and former executive director of the Sinulog Foundation Inc.

Contingents from Mongolia came second while the group representing Indonesia won a special prize.

The Basakanons, a crowd favorite at Sinulog festivals in Cebu, represented the country for the mighty Daegu Festival 2022, one of the biggest dance and festival competitions in the world.

Four Filipino groups made it through the qualifying round.

But the Basakanons were ultimately chosen as the country’s representatives as they were also the winners of the free performance category of the 2020 Sinulog Festival, the last contest organized by the Cebu City Government and SFI before the pandemic hit. .

The Basakanons have also already participated in other international festivals.

They are Cebu City’s most award-winning Sinulog contingent and a local favorite for their iconic, cutting-edge dance routines. For the past three years, they have won the street dance competition at the Sinulog Festival.
