Chembai tanpura Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar emerged from his home in Kottayi near Palakkad on Thursday.
The tanpura used by Carnatic legend Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar was taken in procession to Guruvayur on Thursday ahead of Chembai Music Fest to be held as part of Guruvayur Ekadasi from Friday. It will reach Guruvayur on Friday afternoon.
The legendary tanpura was released from Chembai’s house in Kottayi in a festive mood. Chembai Videyapeeth President Chembai Suresh and Secretary Keezhathur Murugan presented the tanpura to Guruvayur Devaswam President VK Vijayan and Administrator KP Vinayan.
PP Sumod, provincial deputy, was the special guest of the ceremony. Guruvayur Devaswam members Manoj O. Nair, KR Gopinath and C. Manoj, Vaikom Venogopal, Thiruvizha Sivanandan, N. Hari, Guruvayur Manikandan, Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan, Gayatri Thamban, TK Devadas and Zainuddin Pathirippala were present.
The tanpura will be taken to the Chembai Memorial Government Music College here on Friday morning. It will then be transported to the Poozhikkunnu Sri Krishna temple in Ottapalam, where Chembai had held its first and last concerts. Kerala Kalamandalam will also receive the tanpura en route to Guruvayur.
Minister Devaswam K. Radhakrishnan is due to inaugurate Chembai Music Fest at Melpathur Auditorium, Guruvayur on Friday afternoon.
