The first-ever New Crunchy City Music Fest will feature ATARASHII GAKKO! and more.

It’s convention time all over the world, and too bad if it’s not necessary! In August, Crunchyroll will host its Expo Crunchyroll in San Jose, California. However, cosplay and voice actors aren’t the only thing you can expect. The Anime streaming company has created New Crunchy City Music Festival and it will run on the same three days as the Expo, August 5-7. The Music Fest press release describes it this way:

“The New Crunchy City Music Fest will provide Crunchyroll Expo attendees with three days of jam-packed performances. Fans can expect a headlining performance every day, alongside a mix of local and international artists. Select acts from the music festival will be available via streaming and/or video on demand, with more details coming soon. Access to the New Crunchy City Music Fest is included free with Crunchyroll Expo tickets.

As someone who has nearly 1500 Japanese songs on their playlists, I would love to see this. From Bump of Chicken to Zutomayo, my wife and I consume Japanese music like hungry black holes.

ATARASHII GAKKO!

Crunchyroll has announced that ATARASHII GAKKO! will perform at the festival. However, this “girl group” is not just another idol group. Crunchyroll described the musical act:

“ATARASHII GAKKO! (which literally means “new school” in Japanese) are four young women who are redefining what it means to be a girl group. They wear sailor-fuku (sailor suits) uniforms in a style worn by Japanese students in the 70s and 80s with long skirts and rolled-up socks and categorically refuse to be objectified. Their aggressive and expressive dance moves, which they choreograph themselves, are a hybrid of the energy of Japanese butoh dance, heavy metal headbanging and hip-hop street dancing. Musically, AG! brings together elements of modern J-Pop, Showa-era kayokyoku, rap, punk, and dance music, but it would be futile to try to categorize them into any genre.
