UK and France-based sales company Film Constellation has been appointed to handle international rights for the Pakistani film joyland, nominated at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category. North American sales rights for the film will be handled by WME.
According to Variety, joyland is the story of the sexual revolution in a patriarchal family that longs for the birth of a baby boy. While the family wants the boys to carry on their family line, the youngest son secretly joins an erotic dance theater and falls in love with a transsexual star.
joyland is the feature debut of director Saim Sadiq, who won a prize at the 2019 Venice Film Festival for his film Darling.
Sadiq said Variety“My amazing casting gave the characters joyland a kind of empathy and humanity that a filmmaker can only hope for and I am thrilled that the world is experiencing their magic.
According to the Constellation film’s CEO, the sales agency, Sadiq has “woven a tender modern family story” with a weight of gender roles in a society. “It exudes the shared desire to live and love without compromise,” she said.
Today, April 22, the film’s director took to Instagram and wrote, “So excited to share the first image of joyland and deeply touched that the film had its world premiere at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. Virtual hugs for my cast and crew who deserve this moment and so much more,” while crediting his crew.
Sadiq said Pictures last week he hopes joyland generates positivity and a good debate at home, in Pakistan and around the world because a lot of very passionate people put a lot of heart and soul into this film. He also said that he and the team plan to bring the film to Pakistan later this year.
