ARTISTS: The teenagers will compete for a place on stage at the next Solfest.

A COMMUNITY event will see teenage musicians battling it out as they compete for a spot at the upcoming Solfest music festival.

The sold-out Teens That Rock 2022 event, held at Carlisle College of the Arts on July 4 and led by tutor Anna Atkinson, will see eight artists take the stage in front of a talented list of judges, including a member of Hardwicke Circus.

On the judges’ table will be Chris Morris, team leader at Carlisle College of the Arts; Will Morgan, manager of the old fire station; Jonny Foster of Hardwicke Circus; Chloe Clarke-Haywood stage manager at the Solfest music festival and Emma Dockeray from local band Flynt.

“The idea for me for this project was to give young people the experience of playing in a professional environment, on a safe platform, which gives them opportunities to progress as an artist,” Anna said.

“I hope the award inspires them to keep going and making music.”

On the night, a third of the votes will come from the public, a second vote will come from Facebook as they conduct polls with their live stream, and the third vote resides with the judges.

It’s not just a place on the Solfest stage that artists compete for, but the accolade also comes with a concert at Old Fire Station and the creation of a music video, to help artists to start up.

“It’s one of those things that if you added up how much a band would have to pay, it would be a fortune,” Anna continued.

“We have the rest of the teaching staff here at the university helping out, which is the beauty of it, we have the art students doing all the marketing and promotions, the media department doing the filming and the music production does all the live sound – it’s a real collaborative project,” she said.

Anna thanked Carlisle College for all their support in setting up and running the community event.
