The Herne Hill Free Film Festival returns in May 2022 – Brixton Buzz

The Herne Hill Free Film Festival is celebrating the return of in-person screenings in May with a mini festival of screenings in and around SE24.

The event takes place from 10 May to 20 May 2022 at a diverse range of venues around Herne Hill, from a favorite local pub to a craft brewery, a Baptist church and the iconic Herne Hill Velodrome.

The diverse program of free film screenings begins on May 10 with the return of the Festival’s ever-popular Short Film Night, upstairs at The Prince Regent pub.

Thomas Vinterberg’s acclaimed comedy-drama Another Round will follow on May 12 at Canopy Beer Co, the local Herne Hill craft brewery just down the street.

This year’s big outdoor screening takes place at the Herne Hill Velodrome on Sunday May 15 with Tron; Steven Lisberger’s 1982 sci-fi epic.

On May 17, the festival moved to a small local venue, Herne Hill Baptist Church, for The Father with Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman; followed by a live Q&A with co-producer David Parfitt.

To conclude the festival, the 2021 documentary I Am Belmaya will be screened at Espace Effra on May 20. An inspiring story of rebellion, courage and hope in patriarchal Nepal, the screening includes a live Q&A with the film’s director Sue Carpenter following the screening.

The Herne Hill Free Film Festival was created to bring cinema to every corner of the local community, to make the cinema experience accessible to everyone, and to introduce people to films they might not otherwise come across.

This year the festival will support the local Norwood and Brixton Foodbank with fundraisers and food donations collected at the screenings.

The Herne Hill Free Film Festival is a volunteer-run community event made possible through the generous support of Pedder Property. The festival volunteers also thank all the venues for hosting the screenings and the public for their kind donations.
