Launch dinner
5 p.m. on Friday, June 10
Get your tickets now for the 2022 Watermelon Festival Kick-Off Dinner. It’s happening Friday, June 10 at 5 p.m. at the Monticello Opera House (MOH – 185 W. Washington St.). The evening begins with an awards ceremony for the winners of the contests, a baby photo contest and a program cover art contest. A delicious barbecue dinner, provided by North Florida Abstract & Title (NFAT), will be served at 5:30 p.m. Desserts are provided by Big Bend Hospice. Board members from the Monticello-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will join the NFAT staff as servers. Bed races
6:30 p.m. Friday, June 10
After the launch dinner, step out just outside the MOH at the corner of West Washington and Mulberry streets for the Bed Races. Competitors will attach a jumper to a padded bed with wheels and put their foot in motion. Each team’s bed runner will need to get out of bed at a turning point (while lifters turn the bed) and roll a watermelon to a designated point, get back in bed and run to the finish. The adult race will feature participants who are at least 18 years old. The Teen Race features participants aged 13 to 17. Beds will be decorated in hopes of receiving the “Best Dressed Bed” award. Race winners in each category will receive the Bragging Rights Trophy plus a $25 cash prize. Bed Race sponsors include Alpha Foundations, Gulf Coast Lumber & Supply and FitCo Health Club.

watermelon ride
5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 10
Downtown businesses will be open late for Monticello Watermelon Festival shopping and dining. Visit six of twenty-one participating locations clustered at North Jefferson, East Dogwood and Washington Streets, turn in your Watermelon Crawl stamped card and you’ll be entered into a draw to win $500! pickleball tournament
8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday June 11
Head to the grounds of Jefferson Recreation Park (1380 Mamie Scott Dr.) for a new event this year: the Pickleball Tournament! Games will start at 8 a.m. for those 50 and over and at 6 p.m. for those 49 and under. The $35 per person admission fee includes healthy snacks and water.
